The Console Market Today

There have been quite a few different consoles ever since the rise of the first popular console by Ninetendo in the late 80's. I won't go into detail about all of the previous consoles. However, I will bring you up to speed on the big three consoles that are on the market today.

XBOX 360

Xbox pictureThe 360 is the brainchild of the people at the mega software corporation Microsoft. This is the second console that they have put out and it has done very well on the market. The system provides incredible graphics and a the controller is a little less bulky than the original XBOX. The 360 also has HD capability for an even crisper display with HDMI or component video connections. Originally the system came in two styles. One with a hard drive and on without. Now Microsoft has put out a couple other models to give consumers a little more choice. The main difference between all of them is hard drive space. Microsoft has also developed an online gaming community for 360 users called XBOX Live. Live was around during the original XBOX days, but Microsoft has added many more features for 360 owners. Live allows players to download small games, tv shows and movies, play against other people around the world, or simply voice chat with others using a headset.

Ninetendo Wii

Wii pictureThe Wii is the latest offering from the original console king Ninetendo. Instead of developing superior graphics to the competition, Ninetendo decided to focus on changing the gameplay. This decision has paid off for them. The Wii has a unique controller that picks up the motions that a player makes. So instead of moving with a control pad, the player makes several simple physical gestures that are picked up by the system. This allows gaming novices to quickly jump into action on any game and has drawn in a great deal of people who ordinarily wouldn't play video games.

PlayStation 3

PS3 pictureSony has enjoyed a lot of success in the console gaming market since their original PlayStation. They look to continue that trend with the PlayStation 3. The PS3 sales were hurt originally by its large price tag when it was first released. That led Sony to develop a couple different systems with various hard drive sizes so they could knock the price down. Where the PS3 has a leg up on all the competition is its video playback capabilities. Straight out of the box the PS3 is a BluRay player. This allows PS3 owners to view HD quality movies that are put out in BluRay format. The XBOX only allows you to watch DVD's and the Wii doesn't have any video playback features.
